THE INNAUGURAL WORD N SOUND ALL-STARS SHOW

Hot on the heels of the introduction of three new shows to the ever-expanding roster of Word N Sound events, we take a step back to look at how far we’ve come over the past four years, by handing the stage over to the crop of talent that has taken the Johannesburg poetry landscape by storm since coming to prominence on the Word N Sound stage. It really is gonna be an All-Star weekend.

4 Seasons, more than 25 Episodes and 375 poems later; the Word N Sound Series has left an indelible mark on the Johannesburg, and South African Poetry scene. One of the major highlights of the Series, is the Open Mic Poetry League, which at the end of every episode, leaves one competitor with the coveted title of King/Queen of the Mic.

In all this time, and in the aftermath of all these battles and vying for glory, there have been some faces that have stuck with, and become part of the Word N Sound family. Having taken their craft beyond this stage to engage audiences as far afield as Cardiiff, and as quintessentially South African as Cape-Town, some of the stars of these shows return once again to the Word N Sound Stage to give us all a taste of what enabled them to stay the course.

The inaugural Word N Sound All Stars Show will feature the talents of Afurakan, Andrew Manyika, Mandi Poeffecient Vundla, Xongani Maluleke, Mutle Mothibe, Masai Dabula, Bonga Ndziweni and Mpho Khosi. This is one for the history books, don’t miss it.

Elysium Garcia
From the ethereal realm known as the shadows, the Showcase Act of the day will be the winner of the inaugural “Salm for Your Life” competition. Kagiso Tshepe, who has now adopted the moniker “Elysium Garcia”, was a top competitor in the Open Mic Leauge that ran throughout 2013, even making it to the top 5. This accomplished writer has been on such stages as the Word N Sound Festival, and TEDx Johannesburg.

His poem “Manufacturing Kings” also allowed us a foray into the mind of a poet who also works as a graphical designer. Along with fellow Vaal native Mutle Mothibe, their use of video as a complement to the poetry itself, has begun to open up new possibilities in terms of exploring the two art forms. Elysium Garcia, on the strength of “Manufacturing Kings” was nominated for and won the Word N Sound Perfect Poem Award. So, any show that he headlines is guaranteed to be out of this world.

The show happens on the 5th of April from 13:00 at the Market Theatre Laboratory, tickets are sold at the door for R50.00. See you there.

Jacob Zuma faces charges from opposition

If you have been reading this blog, you would be aware that I have been trying to stay away from political matters, nonetheless I have been drawn back at it again. now lets talk about Zuma and Nkandla saga.picture from www.internafrica.org :Apparently the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are laying separate criminal charges against President Jacob Zuma today. this follows the release of the Public Protector's final report on the Nkandla saga. And Sapa reports that Economic Freedom Fighters supporters gathered outside the Sunnyside police station in Pretoria around lunch time on Thursday.

Nkandla has made an appearance on the News again, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela released the much anticipated Nkandla Report and the above graphic is showing the money spend by all the former South African President on Security Upgrades at private Residences

Thuli Madonsela  also adds that the issue is now out of the hands of the Public Protector and with that of the decision makers.
“My residence in Nkandla has been paid for by the Zuma family. All the buildings and every room we use in that residence, was built by ourselves as family and not by government.” said the President Jacob Zuma

I haven't been catching up with a lot of news these days, lets look at what has been going down

Apparently DJ Sbu called people from the Limpopo province stupid (eish) now The residents also took a decision to boycott music and festivals that feature Sbu and artists from his record stable.Sbu ruffled feathers when he called Limpopo citizens "baris" (idiots) during the EFF's election manifesto launch, held at his home town Tembisa last weekend.(no comment)

Rumour has it that Sechaba (Gospel Singer) who was accused of rape, has been going through some tough time with his marriage on the Rock.
Two independent sources told Sunday World - on condition of anonymity - that the award-winning gospel muso claims his wife, Julia Pali, lost it when she suspected that he was seeing other women.
She allegedly slashed their lounge suite with a knife and smashed other household items.
Julia has apparently moved out and resigned as Pali' s manager.

Isibaya Will come back as a soapie

All the Isibaya fans its time to stand up, the moment you've been waiting for has arrived, Isibaya the telenovela will start to broadcast five days in a week.  Isibaya is a 2013 drama television show that  focuses on the battle for wealth and power between the Zungus and the Ndlovus, two rival families living in Thuleka Valley beginning.

Maggie Benedict take a stand against the Panado Drama

Generations actress Maggie Benedict – who plays Akhona was arrested a couple weeks ago for allegedly stealing a pack of Panado

This is what she had to say on Facebook:

@checkerssa ARREST. I have refrained from making any indepth statements regarding my arrest at Checkers in Cresta on the 18th December 2013 because as quickly as the event occurred is as quickly as it became a legal matter. It seemed prudent to wait until proceedings concluded before releasing any statements, but as the case continues and the media attention increases, I’d like to set the record straight

I, UNEQUIVOCALLY, DID NOT STEAL HEADACHE TABLETS FROM CHECKERS.

I am innocent of this alleged crime and there was no basis for the arrest. Every item in my possession was paid for including the tablets I’d purchased weeks earlier that were still unopened. It’s interesting that while I was there, another customer’s packages set off the security system and she was allowed to go without a search. I could not provide a receipt because I’m blessed to have R17.49c not be an expenditure I need to keep track of. Checkers could not provide proof either as the camera covering the relevant aisle didn’t work. It still wasn’t working when we gathered to view footage on the 13th February 2014. Neither party has conclusive evidence of the alleged crime.

As the matter currently stands, the State has offered Diversion. That means in principal that you admit to the allegations against you, look appropriately remorseful and the whole thing goes away. This would be the easiest and most cost effective manner in which to get this matter to finality. So basically it’s a lie that gets me out of this. I’m not sleeping as it is, I don’t see lying to an officer of the law remedying that. I declined the offer.

 I am advised by my legal representative, Mr Jonathan Kaiser of O’Connell Attorneys, that often when a crime is based upon loss of such nominal value and the case is heavily reliant on circumstantial evidence, the State will dismiss it. Checkers can intervene and elect not to proceed with the further participation of the prosecution. Neither has happened. All calls by my attorney to Checkers have to date been met with a noncommittal ‘We’re still trying to find someone to appoint to the matter’ response. I guess it is far easier to Make An Example Of That Actress than it is to admit that perhaps, just perhaps, Checkers’ Anti?Theft machines and cameras might need a service.

I am appalled that this ill?handled misunderstanding requires not a diplomatic conversation to resolve, but rather, a piece of my character. Whatever happens next I wanted to write this statement to correct the stories out there sullying my name and present my side of events.

To every woman who carries her life in her handbag like I do, open everything in it RIGHT NOW! Don’t wait until you need that item to lift the tab, tear the perforated seal or pop the blister pack. That unopened snack bar you keep for emergencies might cost you far more than the price on the shelf.
